Humanities 21 Christmas Cocktail Party
December 5, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm| $25
Merry Christmas Humanities lovers!
Humanities 21 invites you to join us on Tuesday 5 December at 6pm, at the home of one of our committee members, at 64 Tivoli Rd, South Yarra.
Our Christmas Cocktail Party will have plentiful drinks and nibbles, as well as entertainment by two of Melbourne’s leading thinkers. We look forward to celebrating the work we have done in 2017 with our incredible community of supporters, and sharing our plans for 2018 when we’ll continue to fight the good fight to put the humanities back on the agenda.
The Hon Barry Jones AC will entertain us with a playful reading of an Australian Christmas poem, commemorating his friend and admired Australian poet, the late John Clarke. Political scientist Dr Matthew Laing will present his thought-provoking exploration of ‘Martin Luther, Modernity, and the True Meaning of Christmas.’ Five centuries ago, amidst a spiritual and social crisis of confidence in Europe, Luther posited his 95 Theses and set in motion events that would forever change world history. His was a mission to rediscover something fundamental about ourselves and our world – a mission that was just as often political and philosophical as religious. 500 Christmases later, his words and deeds still resonate with us, as many find themselves once again within a milieu of spiritual, social, or political anguish.
Please note parking on Tivoli Rd mostly requires a permit, so you can park instead at Victoria Avenue, near the top of Tivoli Rd or at the Vogue Centre, which has secure underground parking. You can enter the Vogue Centre from River Street or Malcolm Street.
Humanities 21 members are encouraged to bring guests to the Christmas Cocktail Party. They can redeem the cost of their ticket if they sign up as Humanities 21 members at the party.
We look forward to seeing you, and if you have any questions please contact our General Manager Maeve on 0417 464 001 or [email protected]
